Irina Nikolaevna Vilinskaya was a Ukrainian Soviet music pedagogue, singer, and composer born in Odessa. She was the daughter of the composer Nikolai Vilinsky. Although she showed diverse talents in her youth, including an aptitude for mathematics and competitive swimming, she eventually dedicated herself to music. She began her studies at the Odessa Music College and the Odessa Conservatory. During World War II, she evacuated to Tashkent, where she studied at the Tashkent Conservatory, before completing her education and postgraduate studies at the Kiev Conservatory under Professor D. G. Yevtushenko.

Vilinskaya established a significant career at the Kiev Conservatory, where she worked on the solo singing faculty, eventually becoming an acting professor. She viewed the singing voice as a unique instrument that required careful handling to avoid damage from complex repertoire. Consequently, her pedagogical method focused on the gentle and gradual development of a singer's natural gifts. She utilized carefully selected repertoire and special warm-ups to ensure both high professional technical skill and the creative longevity of her students. She was noted for her ability to improve timbral qualities, expand vocal range, and develop musicality.

As a composer, Vilinskaya is best known for her extensive contributions to vocal pedagogy through her original vocalises and arrangements of Ukrainian and Russian folk songs. Her unique combination of skills as a vocalist, pianist, and composer allowed her to create a renowned series of vocalise collections for various voice types. These works were praised by prominent figures such as Lev Revutsky and have been widely used for decades in conservatories and music schools throughout Ukraine, Russia, and other countries. She also authored theoretical works dedicated to vocal pedagogy.
