Ivari Ilja (born May 3, 1959, in Tallinn) is a distinguished Estonian pianist, accompanist, and music educator. He currently serves as the Rector of the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre, a position he has held since 2017, and acts as the President of the Estonian Music Council. Born into a musical family, Ilja began his formal training at the Tallinn State Conservatory under Laine Mets, graduating in 1981. He subsequently furthered his studies at the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory in the class of Vera Gornostayeva, completing his assistantship-internship under the guidance of Sergei Dorensky in 1986.

He began his teaching career at the Tallinn Conservatory (now the Estonian Academy of Music and Theatre) in 1986, becoming a professor in 1999. Before focusing on pedagogy and administration, Ilja established a significant reputation as a talented accompanist. In 1980, he attracted the attention of the renowned opera singer Irina Arkhipova, with whom he collaborated for 15 years. Together, they prepared the extensive concert cycle "Anthology of Russian Romance," which enjoyed sustained success in the USSR and internationally for many years.

Ilja is also widely recognized for his long-standing artistic partnership with the baritone Dmitri Hvorostovsky, which began in 1989. He has collaborated with other prominent vocalists such as Maria Guleghina, Elena Zaremba, and Albina Shagimuratova. These collaborations led to performances on the world's most prestigious stages, including La Scala, Queen Elizabeth Hall, Wigmore Hall, the Bolshoi Theatre, Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, the Musikverein in Vienna, and the Mozarteum in Salzburg.

In addition to his work as a collaborative pianist, Ilja actively performs as a solo pianist. His repertoire encompasses works by Fryderyk Chopin, Johannes Brahms, Robert Schumann, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Sergei Prokofiev, and Benjamin Britten. Throughout his career, he has achieved success in several competitions, including the International Frederick Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw and the Vianna da Motta International Music Competition in Lisbon. His contributions to culture have been recognized with the Estonian State Cultural Award (2001) and the Order of the White Star, IV Class (2008).
