Jakob Dont was an Austrian violinist, composer, and influential music pedagogue born in Vienna in 1815. The son of Valentin Dont, he received his early musical formation in the cultural environment of the Austrian capital. He studied violin at the Vienna Conservatory under two noted teachers, Josef Böhm and Georg Hellmesberger, both of whom played important roles in shaping the Viennese violin school of the nineteenth century.

Dont devoted much of his professional life to teaching. Beginning in 1853 he served on the faculty of the Vienna Teachers’ Institute, and from 1871 he taught at the Vienna Conservatory. His legacy as a composer is rooted primarily in pedagogical works for violin, which remain integral to technical training for the instrument. His collection "Twenty-Four Etudes and Caprices” (Op. 35), known as "Gradus ad Parnassum," is still widely used and valued for its systematic technical development.

Among Dont’s distinguished students was Leopold Auer, who later became one of the most influential violin teachers of the early twentieth century. Dont's impact on violin pedagogy thus extended far beyond his own lifetime through the achievements of his students and the continued relevance of his instructional compositions.

Jakob Dont died in Vienna in 1888. In recognition of his contributions to Austrian musical culture, a Viennese alleyway, Dontgasse, was named in his honor in 1938.
