Jan Oertl
Jan Oertl (also known as Ivan Oertl) was a Croatian cellist and music theorist of Czech origin. He was born in Horní Slavkov in 1827 and died in Zagreb on December 8, 1889. He graduated from the Prague Conservatory in 1849, where he was a student of Anton Träg.
After working and teaching in Vienna for several years, Oertl was invited to Zagreb in 1852, where he spent the rest of his life. He taught at the Zagreb Academy of Music and is regarded as the founder of the Croatian cello school; his students included Juro Tkalčić. Beginning in 1870, he also performed in the Zagreb Opera orchestra.
In addition to playing the cello, Oertl was a professor of music theory. He authored the first Croatian textbook on the subject, titled "General Theoretical and Practical Introduction to the Science of Music" (Obćenita teoritično-praktična pripravna nauka glasbe), which was published in 1880.
