Johann Herzog
Johann Georg Herzog (5 August 1822 – 3 February 1909) was a German organist and music educator noted for his long service in church music and teaching. He was born in Hummendorf (now part of the municipality of Weißenbrunn) and died in Munich.
From 1843 he worked as an organist, and from 1848 as cantor, at St. Matthew's Church in Munich. Between 1850 and 1854 he led an organ class at the Munich Conservatory, combining practical performance with pedagogical work.
In 1854 Herzog moved to Erlangen, where he remained until 1888. There he taught music and singing at the university and directed the city’s newly established Institute of Church Music. In 1866 he received an honorary doctorate in musicology.
From 1888 he lived again in Munich. Herzog composed organ works and church music and compiled several collections of sacred songs. Among his pupils were Josef Rheinberger and Friedrich Rigel.
