Juan Federico Edelmann was a Cuban pianist and music educator of French origin, born in Strasbourg in 1795. He was the son of the harpsichordist Jean Frédéric Edelmann, who was executed before his birth. Edelmann studied at the Paris Conservatory, receiving a solid musical foundation that shaped his later career. In 1816 he relocated to Havana, where he would become a central figure in the development of the island’s musical culture.

In Cuba, Edelmann became known as the "father of Cuban pianism" due to his profound influence on local piano performance and pedagogy. He founded the Philharmonic Society of Saint Cecilia and directed its concerts, contributing significantly to Havana’s musical life. As a teacher, he instructed several of the most important Cuban pianists of the era, including Pablo Devernine, Fernando Aristi, and Manuel Saumell.

Beyond teaching and performing, Edelmann also worked as a music critic and played an important role in the publication of Cuban folk dance melodies, helping document and preserve the island’s musical traditions. His contributions left a lasting impact on Cuban musical identity before his death in Havana in 1848.
