Karl Heinrich Barth was a distinguished German pianist and music pedagogue. He began his musical education with his father before continuing his studies in Potsdam with Ludwig Steinmann from 1856 to 1862. Later, he trained under the guidance of renowned figures such as Hans von Bülow, Hans Bronsart von Schellendorf, and Carl Tausig, and he also studied composition with Adolph Marx.

Barth toured Europe with success and frequently performed in a duet with Joseph Joachim, as well as in a piano trio with Heinrich de Ahna and Robert Hausmann. He was particularly known as a proponent of the piano compositions of Johannes Brahms. Additionally, he prepared an edition of Domenico Scarlatti's keyboard works in 1901.

His teaching career was extensive and influential. He taught at the Stern Conservatory starting in 1868, and subsequently at the Berlin Hochschule für Musik from 1871 to 1921. He received the title of professor in 1881 and headed the piano department from 1910. Among Barth's notable students were Arthur Rubinstein, Wilhelm Kempff, Heinrich Neuhaus, and Erwin Bodky. He also performed as a composer.
