Lev Raaben
Lev Nikolaevich Raaben was a prominent Soviet musicologist born in Grozny. He was born into the family of engineer Nikolai von Frantsevich Raaben, who descended from an ancient Swedish noble lineage that entered Russian service following the conquests of Peter the Great.
In 1935, Raaben entered the Leningrad Conservatory, where he graduated in 1940 from the violin class. After World War II, he continued his postgraduate studies at the same conservatory under the supervision of B. A. Struve. In 1948, he defended his candidate dissertation titled "Instrumental Ensemble in Russian Music."
Raaben achieved significant academic recognition, receiving the degree of Doctor of Arts in 1968 and the title of professor at the Department of Violin and Viola at the Leningrad Conservatory in 1972. For thirty years, he headed the music sector of the Leningrad State Institute of Theatre, Music, and Cinematography named after N. K. Cherkasov.
Throughout his career, he published over 140 research works dedicated to conducting, music history, bowed string performance, and 20th-century composition. His extensive bibliography includes authoritative books on quartet performance, the violin and cello works of Tchaikovsky, Leopold Auer, Soviet chamber-instrumental music, and the lives of remarkable violinists and cellists.
