Lev Seidel
Lev Mikhailovich Seidel (1895–1961) was a Russian cellist and music educator, recognized as an Honored Art Worker of the Lithuanian SSR. Born in Rostov-on-Don, he began his musical studies at the Rostov Music College in 1905 and started performing in concerts by 1909. He later continued his education at the Saint Petersburg Conservatory from 1912 to 1917, studying in the class of Louis Abbiate.
His early career involved teaching positions in Yekaterinburg, Taganrog, and Rostov between 1917 and 1930. From 1930 to 1945, Seidel worked in Moscow, where he taught at the Ippolitov-Ivanov Music College. He also served as the principal cellist at the Nemirovich-Danchenko Music Theatre from 1932 to 1937 and joined the newly formed State Symphony Orchestra of the USSR in 1936.
In 1945, Seidel moved to the Lithuanian SSR, where he remained for the rest of his life. During his first five years there, he performed as a member of the Lithuanian State Philharmonic string quartet. He held a teaching position at the Vilnius Conservatory, where he headed the string instrument department. In 1961, shortly before his death, he served on the jury of the All-Union Cello Competition.
