Lev Shugom
Lev Isayevich Shugom (1946–2017) was a distinguished Russian pianist, music pedagogue, and professor who served as the Rector of the Saratov State Conservatory from 2008 to 2016. Born in Saratov into the family of a World War II veteran, he dedicated his entire professional life to the musical development of his home region. His contributions to the arts were recognized with high honors, including the titles of Honored Artist of the RSFSR in 1989 and People's Artist of the Russian Federation in 2004.
Shugom received his musical education at the Saratov State Conservatory under Professor S. S. Benditsky and further honed his skills at the Gnessin State Musical and Pedagogical Institute in Moscow under A. L. Yokheles. He also completed an internship at the Moscow Conservatory. His career at the Saratov Conservatory spanned fifty years, from 1967 to 2017, during which he taught, served as the Head of the Special Piano Department, and led the Piano Department of the Academy for Gifted Children. In 2012, he oversaw the opening of the Children's Music School for Gifted Children at the conservatory, which was later named in his honor.
As a performer, Shugom appeared in numerous cities across Russia and abroad, collaborating with prominent domestic and foreign conductors. He was a frequent jury member for prestigious regional and international piano competitions, including the Vladimir Horowitz Competition in Kiev, the Safonov Competition, and the Fryderyk Chopin Competition in Moscow. He remained actively involved in mentoring students and attending academic concerts until the end of his life.
