Lorenzo Gibelli was a prominent Italian composer, vocalist and influential singing teacher active in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Born in Bologna in 1718, he studied under Giovanni Battista Martini and developed an exceptionally wide vocal range from bass to lower-tenor registers. Although his own operatic career was modest, he gained great reputation as a pedagogue and church musician. He was elected a member of the Accademia Filarmonica di Bologna in 1741 and served as its “Principe” from 1753 onwards. He held appointments as maestro di cappella at major churches in Bologna and composed five operas, five oratorios and over four hundred sacred works—a body of work demonstrating mastery of counterpoint combined with a melodic flexibility. Among his notable pupils were the castrati Girolamo Crescentini and Francesco Roncaglia, and the tenor Matteo Babbini. Gibelli’s influence on the vocal tradition of his era was considerable.

Known also by the nickname “Gibellone,” he was born Lorenzo Maria Petronio Gibelli on 24 November 1718 and died on 5 November 1812. Among the several Bolognese churches in which he served, the Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore was particularly notable in his career.

His life and work were later documented in the 1830 biography "Vita di Lorenzo Gibelli, Celebre Contrappuntista e Cantore" by Carlo Pancaldi, which contributed to preserving his legacy as a distinguished contrapuntist and revered teacher.
