Mikhail Khazanovsky
Mikhail Khazanovsky (1906–1982) was a prominent Soviet pianist and educator who played a significant role in the development of the piano school in Kharkiv, Ukraine. Born in Kharkiv, he received his early musical education at the Kharkiv Music and Drama Institute, graduating in 1925 under the guidance of L. I. Fanenshtil. He later continued his studies at the Leningrad State Conservatory, where he was a student of the renowned professor Leonid Nikolaev, graduating in 1928.
In 1933, Khazanovsky co-founded a specialized studio for musically gifted children in Kharkiv alongside M. Itigina. This institution eventually evolved into the Kharkiv State Music Lyceum, serving as the alma mater for numerous distinguished performers and composers. Khazanovsky remained one of the leading piano teachers at this school for over forty years, shaping the early careers of many young musicians.
Khazanovsky's academic career was primarily centered at the Kharkiv University of Arts, where he taught from 1934 until his death in 1982. Rising from the position of assistant to professor, he also served as the head of the special piano department from 1953 to 1971. Throughout his long pedagogical career, he mentored eighty-five pianists, many of whom became the foundation of the Kharkiv piano school and continued his educational legacy.
