Sergei Nikolaevich Istomin (also known as Sergei Nikolaevich Khokhlov) is a Russian musician specializing in the cello and viola da gamba. Born in 1959, he began his cello studies at the age of six at the Gnessin School in the class of V. M. Birina. He later attended the Moscow Tchaikovsky Conservatory, studying under Professor V. Ya. Feygin. He continued his education in the United States at the Oberlin Conservatory (Ohio) studying viola da gamba with Catharina Meints, and at the Oberlin Baroque Performance Institute with August Wenzinger.

Istomin collaborates regularly with numerous renowned musicians and ensembles. He serves as the concertmaster of the cello section for the Anima Eterna symphony orchestra in Belgium. He participates in various musical projects, including duets with pianists Viviana Sofronitsky, Jos van Immerseel, and Claire Chevallier, as well as a trio with Midori Seiler and Jos van Immerseel. He has also worked with the Tafelmusik Baroque Orchestra among others.

He is a regular participant in music festivals globally, having performed at the Baroque Opera Festival in Beaune, La Folle Journée, Festival van Vlaanderen, Festival Saint-Riquier, Alden Biesen, MAfestival in Bruges, Festival Oude Muziek Utrecht, Bachfest Leipzig, and the Lockenhaus Chamber Music Festival. His repertoire encompasses works from the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras, as well as music by contemporary composers. His discography includes recordings of works by J.S. Bach, C.P.E. Bach, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Chopin, and Liszt.
