Sergey Vladimirovich Tarnovsky (3 November 1883 – 22 March 1976) was a Russian, Soviet, and American pianist and music teacher. He was born in Kyiv and later died in Los Angeles, California.

He graduated from the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, studying piano in the class of Anna Yesipova. Tarnovsky toured in various European countries as a soloist together with the conductor Vasily Safonov, and also worked as an accompanist with the violinist Nathan Milstein and the singer Maria Kurenko.

Tarnovsky’s teaching career lasted more than 60 years. He taught in Odessa and later became a professor at the Kyiv Conservatory; among his pupils in Kyiv were Vladimir Horowitz and Alexander Uninsky.

In 1928 he emigrated to Paris, and from 1930 he settled in the United States. He taught in Los Angeles, where his students included Horacio Gutierrez; among his last students in the mid-1970s was Madeline Stowe, who after Tarnovsky’s death left music for an acting career.
