Valentin Dont
Joseph Valentin Dont was an Austrian cellist born in Nieder-Georgenthal in what is now Czechia. He received his early musical education in Prague, studying under the cellist Jan Stastny, which laid the foundation for his later professional career.
In 1804 he moved to Vienna, a major center of musical life in the early nineteenth century, where he performed in the orchestras of the leading theaters. His work in these ensembles placed him within the vibrant Viennese musical culture of the Classical period.
The music historian W. J. von Wasielewski described Dont as a notable master of both quartet and orchestral performance, acknowledging his technical skill and artistic contribution to the development of cello playing. He was also the father of Jakob Dont, who would later become a well‑known violinist and composer.
