Vladimir Ovchinnikov
Vladimir Pavlovich Ovchinnikov is a Soviet and Russian pianist, designated as a People's Artist of the Russian Federation in 2005. Born in Belebey, Bashkir ASSR, he studied in Moscow at the Central Music School under A.D. Artobolevskaya and subsequently at the Moscow Conservatory under Alexei Nasedkin. He currently serves as a professor at the Moscow Conservatory and is a soloist with the Moscow State Philharmonic.
Ovchinnikov achieved international recognition through a series of major competition successes. In 1980, he won second prize at the Montreal International Piano Competition. In 1982, he shared the second prize (with no first prize awarded) at the VII International Tchaikovsky Competition with Peter Donohoe. His career reached new heights in 1987 when he won the prestigious Leeds International Piano Competition, leading to extensive concert tours in the United Kingdom, Japan, Canada, and the United States.
His performance repertoire focuses primarily on Russian composers and European Romantics of the 19th century. Ovchinnikov has recorded an extensive discography featuring works by Tchaikovsky, Liszt, Rachmaninoff, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Mussorgsky, Reger, Barber, and Taneyev for labels such as EMI, Collins Classics, Russian Seasons, and Chandos. His playing is noted for its stylistic individuality, technical proficiency, and flexibility.
Beyond his performing career, Ovchinnikov has held significant administrative and educational roles. From 2000 to 2021, he was the President of the Association of Tchaikovsky Competition Laureates, and from 2011 to 2016, he served as the Director of the Central Music School at the Moscow Conservatory. He frequently serves as a jury member for international competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition.
